If your laptop barely holds a charge anymore, or if the battery dies much faster than it used to, you might think you need to buy a new battery or download a sketchy third-party app to check its health.

You don't.

Windows has a hidden, built-in diagnostic tool that creates a highly detailed battery health report right in your web browser. It takes less than 30 seconds and tells you exactly how much your battery has degraded.

Here is exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt

You do not need to run this as an administrator, but it is good practice.

  1. Press the Windows Key.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Click on Command Prompt.

Step 2: Run the Battery Report Command

Once the black terminal window is open, type this exact command and press Enter:

text

powercfg /batteryreport

Step 3: Open the Report

After you press Enter, Windows will instantly generate an HTML report and save it to your user folder. The terminal will show you exactly where the file is saved (usually C:\Users\YourName\battery-report.html).

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Go to your C: Drive -> Users -> Your Username.
  3. Look for the file named battery-report.html.
  4. Double-click it to open it in your browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.).

Step 4: Read the "Design Capacity" vs. "Full Charge Capacity"

Scroll down to the section labeled Installed Batteries. You will see two numbers that matter:

  • Design Capacity: The battery's capacity when it was brand new out of the factory.
  • Full Charge Capacity: The maximum charge your battery can hold right now.

How to calculate your battery health:

Divide the Full Charge Capacity by the Design Capacity, then multiply by 100.

Example: If your Design Capacity is 50,000 mWh and your Full Charge Capacity is 40,000 mWh, your battery health is 80%. If your health is below 50%, it might be time to replace the battery.

Why this works

Most people download bloatware or "PC cleaner" apps to check their battery, which often slows the computer down. This command relies purely on the data the battery's internal controller sends directly to Windows. It is completely safe, 100% accurate, and built right into your operating system.

Never buy a third-party battery checker again. The native Windows command is the fastest and safest way to find the truth about your laptop's lifespan.
