If your computer is feeling sluggish, you probably open Task Manager to see what's going wrong. But Task Manager is often too basic. It hides background processes and doesn't give you a clear, real-time picture of what is actually bottlenecking your system.

You don't need to download a heavy third-party PC cleaner or performance monitor to figure this out.

Windows has a hidden, advanced diagnostic tool called Resource Monitor. It shows you exactly which apps are eating your CPU, RAM, and Disk space in real-time. And you can open it in exactly 5 seconds with one command.

Here is exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt

  1. Press the Windows Key.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Click on Command Prompt.

Step 2: Run the Resource Monitor Command

Once the black terminal window is open, type this exact command and press Enter:

text

resmon

Step 3: Find the Culprit

A new window called Resource Monitor will instantly open. You will see four main tabs on the left: Overview, CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network.

Click on the CPU tab. You will see a list of every single process running on your computer. Click the header that says "Average CPU" to sort the list from highest to lowest.

If an app is at 80% or 90%, that is what is slowing down your computer.

Step 4: Check Your Disk

Next, click the Disk tab. Click the "Total (B/s)" header to sort by highest usage.

If your Disk usage is at 100% constantly, your computer will feel incredibly slow, even if your CPU is fine. The Resource Monitor will show you exactly which app (for example, MsMpEng.exe for Windows Defender, or svchost.exe for background updates) is thrashing your hard drive.

Why this works

Resource Monitor uses the exact same internal data that Windows uses to manage your hardware. Unlike third-party tools, it requires zero installation, uses practically no memory itself, and runs 100% offline.

The next time your PC lags, don't guess. Run resmon and you will find the exact app causing the problem in seconds.
