If your computer is running slowly, making clicking noises, or freezing randomly, you might be worried that your hard drive or SSD is about to fail. Losing all your files, photos, and documents is a terrifying thought.
You don't need to download third-party disk health software (which often contains bloatware or malware).
Windows has two built-in commands that instantly tell you exactly how healthy your drive is. One is a quick 1-second status check, and the other is a deep, safe scan that looks for hidden disk errors without restarting your computer.
Here is exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Press the Windows Key.
- Type cmd.
- Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Click Yes if a User Account Control prompt appears.
Step 2: The 1-Second Health Check
Once the black terminal window is open, type this exact command and press Enter:
text
wmic diskdrive get status
What you will see:
A single word will appear: OK or Pred Fail.
- OK: Your drive's internal controller is reporting that it is perfectly healthy.
- Pred Fail: (Predictive Failure) Your drive is reporting that it is about to die. If you see this, back up your files immediately.
Step 3: The Deep Scan (Without Restarting)
The wmic command is fast, but it only checks the drive's firmware. To scan the actual file system for corruption or bad sectors, use this command:
text
chkdsk C: /scan
Press Enter. Windows will now scan your C: drive for errors in the background. It will not restart your computer, and you can keep working while it runs.
What you will see:
It will take a minute or two. At the end, it will say either "Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems" or "Windows found errors".
Step 4: What if Windows finds errors?
If the chkdsk /scan command finds errors, you can tell Windows to automatically fix them by running this command:
text
chkdsk C: /spotfix
(Note: If Windows says it cannot fix the drive because it is in use, simply restart your computer and let Windows fix it during the boot process).
Why this works
Most people ignore their hard drive until it's too late. By running these two commands once a month, you can catch failing drives and file system corruption before you lose your data. It is completely safe, requires no downloads, and is built right into your operating system.
Don't wait for the blue screen of death. Run these commands today and give yourself peace of mind.
